[Review] Apps World Europe 2012

Apps World Europe is an annual expo of multi-platform apps held in London and I attended for my first time this year.

Upon entering the venue of Earls Court 2 in London I was unable to miss the futuristic-looking stand of diamond sponsors Samsung. At the stand I was treated to a demo of their AllShare software which enables wireless sharing of media across devices. If your partner or housemates have media on their Samsung smartphone or tablet and have chosen to enable sharing of the content, this enables you to stream on to your own mobile device or through a television. This and ChatOn, Samsung’s real-time chat service, were clearly the hero products for the stand and featured on the branding. There was also a recruitment area where one of you lucky developers may end up landing yourself a job with the consumer electronics giant!

The only other stands that stood out for me were Blackberry with their smart branding on their stand for a “porting masterclass”. Obviously no one develops for Blackberry devices first so dedicating their stand to “porting” was a smart move. BubblePix have a very interesting 360 photo and video add-on for smartphones and Cyber Duck impressed me with their UX-led development.

I only sat in on one seminar and that was Samsung presenting on their ChatOn API. Unlike a lot of API presentations I’ve seen, this stood out due to the examples of how third-parties use the API to integrate into their own apps.

Apps World, now in its third year, is one of the must-attend events in the app developer’s calendar and I will be back next year.
